Wrapping gifts with double-sided wrapping paper. It's easier than you think
Double-sided gift wrap is fantastic. It’s incredibly versatile. But of course, you do need to know how to use it. What seems super simple to one person might seem impossible to another. Are you part of that second group? If so, we’re happy to help with some great tips and inspiration—so you, too, can get the most out of your double-sided gift wrap. You can do it!
Four options
When using double-sided wrapping paper, you actually have four options: the front side facing out, the back side facing out, the front side facing out with the back side folded over, or the reverse.
If you only print on the front or back, the double-sided print will be a surprise. This creates a fun effect when unwrapping the gift.
When you use wrapping paper, you’re aiming for a beautifully wrapped gift—but without the surprise. Want to know how to wrap a gift neatly without using wrapping paper? Then check out our blog post on the topic.
Wrapping with a cover
When you wrap your gift with a cover, you’ll need double-sided tape or gift stickers to achieve a truly beautiful result. After all, you’d rather not see any tape on your cover—it doesn’t look nice. So here’s what you’ll need:
– Double-sided wrapping paper
– Scissors – use a pair of scissors that are nice and sharp and cut smoothly
– Double-sided tape, tape dispenser, or gift label
– Optional: regular tape
Here's how to do it
Place your gift on the wrapping paper and measure out the amount of paper you need carefully. Just like when wrapping regular gifts, it’s important not to use too much paper.
When making wrappers, you’ll need to use extra paper for the wrapper itself and add an extra centimeter for a fold. For a straight wrapper, the extra length is the width of the desired wrapper plus about 1 centimeter added to the circumference of the gift, plus 2 centimeters of overlap where you’ll seal the wrapper. So: circumference + 2 + wrapper + 1.
Measuring sloped edges
For slanted folds, you need the entire width of the fold triangle—that is, from the bottom left to the top right. So you measure the long side of the triangle formed by the fold, plus one centimeter.
So, as in our example, add 12 plus 1 centimeter to the circumference of your package and 2 centimeters to secure the paper. In other words: circumference + 2 + flap triangle + 1.
Fold the cover
Decide which side of the wrapping paper will be the outside; the other side will be your flap. Place the paper in front of you with the flap side facing down and the side where the flap will go facing toward you.
First, fold over a narrow edge of about 1 centimeter. This gives it a nice, neat finish and hides the cut edge.
Next, fold the wrapper to the desired width. You can adjust the width as needed. Be sure to consider the proportion between the wrapper and the gift itself. And, of course, make sure the wrapper isn’t too wide. You’ll want to leave about 2 centimeters of overlap so you can secure the wrapper on the other side of the paper.
